Hand-Wavingly Fun Leap Motion Shipping May 13

If you pre-ordered a Leap Motion, it’ll land in your mailbox this May — nearly one full year after it was introduced.

In May 2012, the Leap Motion made its debut, and it immediately set the standard by which all other gesture-based systems would be judged. The 3-D motion-capturing device tracks hands and fingers simultaneously, and its tiny cameras are incredibly precise — they can spot in-air movements as small as 1/100th of a millimeter.

Early adopters who pre-ordered the device will see their Leaps leave the warehouse on May 13. Shipments to retailer Best Buy will begin on May 19. The company is prioritizing pre-orders for shipping, but according to Leap Motion co-founder and CEO Michael Buckwald, “We are in mass production for hundreds of thousands of units. The expectation is that we will continue to fill all pre-orders that come in between now and the ship date in May.”

Leap Motion is also introducing its curated app store, Airspace. At launch, the store will have Cut the Rope, Wreck-It Ralph from Disney, a Weather Channel app, and plug-ins for apps from Autodesk and Corel. The apps and app store will be available at launch.

The $80 Leap Motion works with Windows 7 and later, and Mac OS X 10.7 and later.
